Evolvotron_0.4.0-2_i386 Ubuntu Feisty .deb Package

UPDATE! Evolvotron is now available in Getdeb, thanks to a request by me 😀

Guess what? I passed several hours yesterday looking for a working version of Evolvotron compiled for Ubuntu. I found debian packages. D’ya think they could do the job? Naa.. compiled for a strange version of libc6 not present in Ubuntu Feisty. So what should I have done, just forget about it and go ahead?

Evolvotron in one of its glorious screenshots.

Impossible. I love this program, I can’t live without it and the strange thing is that not a large number of persons seem to know of the existence of Evolvotron.

I tryed to compile the source myself and, as always, failed. Almost never managed to compile something actually. I have build-essential installed, automake and every other thing you may wonder but I never or almost never managed to compile any damned thing on my Linux box.

So I thought there ought to be a way to change dependencyes on a deb package and asked my local LUG for help… as always, those every kind people told me that I could have downloaded the deb source, change the dependencyes (I dunno how to do it but it looks like I HAD to know it) and then recompile everything, yes….. dammit.

So I looked in the net for some working deb package. Found nothing. Then I looked for an rpm instead, converted it with Alien, didn’t work and at the end… when I was exausted but determinated to install evolvotron…. I found a working rpm! Now I converted it with Alien and it works in Ubuntu Feisty! I’m posting the file here.

Download evolvotron for i386 machines working in Ubuntu Feisty HERE. Remember that it looks like a tar but you have to RENAME (Not expand) it and remove the .tar addition, leave only the .deb extension, double click on it and Ubuntu will install Evolvotron fine.

One note: there’s no menù entry, you have to launch it with the command “evolvotron” (Without quotes) from wherever you prefer: command line, alt+F2, your choice. Of course you can create a menù entry yourself! I did it.

  1. Sorry you had such a tough time finding/building a Ubuntu version of evolvotron! Gürkan Sengün (Debian Developer who did the “official” Debian packages) said he was also going to package it for Ubuntu too so hopefully things will be easier in the future. I’m also expecting to put Debian & Ubuntu .debs up on sourceforge for future releases (c.f the sister “fracplanet” project). Evolvotron 0.5.0 should be out in a few weeks if all goes well.

  2. Woha oha!!! A reply by the original Evolvotron author 😀 ! I’m astonished! Well, I don’t mind having done what I did and please be sure to tell me in this post when the Ubuntu Package is released! I’ll just update this post to point to the ubuntu official package instead then mine 😉 ! And I’m bloody waiting for the next release!

What can I say? I love your program and am sure that you already understood it by this post… right? I believe it is absolutely incredible and also a lot of my friends think that too.. gnome look could be entirely filled of extra cool wallpapers created with evolvotron :D! Just a little additional work in The Gimp is needed sometime… and by the way, have a look at my Art Of Cappuccino Linux Theme, the wallpapers has been created with the help of Evolvotron and I mentioned it in every released file ;D

Thanks a lot for creating this very large piece of mathematical magic for the opensource world!!!

  3. Looks like Evolvotron for Ubuntu Feisty is up at

Haven’t tried it myself; I assume it’s Gürkan Sengün’s handiwork again.

  4. Hi Tim, actually it was me who asked them for a package to be created! 😀 I’ll create a post about it, they mailed me back, infact, saying that Evolvotron package had been created! Hope it helps you spread your wonderful tool 😀
